In my growing up days, i could remember vividly how we get rid of rats in our house. We made use of something that looks like gum on a plank and place a piece of nice smelling meat or fish on it. The rats get entangled in it, when trying to eat up the meat or fish and we finished up the remaining job by killing the rats. So also are people make to steal and sentence them later.
In most of the third world countries, particularly in Africa, our leaders are more concerned about their own purses than the citizens. Vices, such as burglary, theft, extortion, internet scam, and prostitution thrive, because we have leaders who are not committed to the plight of their citizens and still go on to judge them. Why judging them, then, since they have made no plan for the people not to commit such vices. It is impossible for their citizens not to commit such vices when an enabling environment is not created. Also it is impossible for their citizens not to do so, when they that should protect the law are found kicking against it. If they that should protect the law are found in the act of looting public funds themselves, into foreign accounts, and ask their citizens to obey it. Which law!, is it the law which they that stand for it, have themselves breached. I think they have no say anymore in it. Why then, do they still judge? Is the case of the big rats having immunities, why the small rats don't? You will ask, is anybody bigger than the law? No! we are all exactly the same in the face of the law. So therefore, why do they treat some people different from others in the face of the law, even when they have committed the same crime.
In Nigeria now, many governors and government officials found guilty of looting and laundering of public funds are protected from facing the rod of the law, which they themselves swore to abide with when coming to power. But when the citizens are found guilty of the same vices, they do not delay to convict them. Is there no partiality in the law?. I think they are the ones that should dance to the music of the law immediately without delay, before the citizens. They should make their treatment exemplify the shame in breaching the law when in power. By so doing, the citizens we learn that taking the mandate of power is not for anyone to enrich himself. But the opposite its what is found in Nigeria. Here, they now make looting of national treasury looks attractive. Because when an individual loots billions of naira and only to lose away few millions to fine against his act, then what are we saying. They are making the intention of some that have nothing to contribute to the development of the nation, but to come and steal, a welcome idea. What message are they now passing to the young generation? I guess, being in power is good, come and steal yours. Then, how will we ever have a brighter tomorrow, since those that should change tomorrow, themselves have been corrupted by the deeds of their today's leaders. It's a pity!
