With the immanent wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, The Kings Speech sweeping the OSCARs and Madonna about to go into production for her forthcoming film featuring King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson, this summer is the perfect time to stage your own vintage Royal Wedding or a Union Jack themed wedding which is tremendous fun and will go down a storm with guests.
You'll need lots of Union Jacks which seem to be on everything this summer - cushions, fabric, bunting, tableware - you name it. There a fantastic range of glitter Union Jack cushions and ones featuring the word Love available on the internet. I have spotted them in cut-price high street fashion outlets recently. Go on the internet and search for 'Coronation Street Party' to see how they did it in the 1950's. There are some fabulous black and white shots of street parties and indoor events - all the children waving little Union Jacks on sticks is one idea you should seriously consider.
Think about having afternoon tea with cucumber sandwiches and cupcakes. Rather than white china, why not track down vintage tea sets? They are cheap as chips in second hand shops and jumble sales because who has the space to store them these days? Rope in your mates and hit the car boot sales on a mission to get cheap vintage china for your bash. Don't worry if they don't match, that is all part of the fun.
For the children you could hire a traditional Pick 'n Mix counter or buy a load of sweeties in red, white and blue. Maybe have your names put into seaside rock? There are companies who do this and the cost is not astronomical. When you are planning food for late afternoon or evening, for both kids and grown ups traditional holiday treats are always a big hit and a nice departure from the usual wedding fare. Hire a candy floss van, an ice cream van and a traditional fish and chip van then watch people make new friends in the queue.
Finally, fancy dress. Have your ceremony and wedding breakfast with a contemporary formal or smart dress code, then let everyone go off and change into vintage clothing. Vintage is easy to come by since there will be a vintage clothing specialist in most towns where you can rent or buy. If you simply say the theme is 'vintage', people can choose their period, Victorian, Edwardian, the mad 20's or the 1950's. This will see Teddy boys dancing with Flapper Girls and terribly dapper chaps in tweeds or pinstripes opposite a girl in the original Chanel style Little Black Dress. Best of all, as the Prince and Princess for one day only, you get to insist everybody calls you Sir and M'am. That's M'am to rhyme with ham, not palm.
