Imagine yourself waking up in the morning at you start doing your routine stuff and when you go out you see three suns shining upon your head and you are left in complete disbelief. No one will buy this story for many but what if in Mongolia it happens and images are shared on the internet.
Off course it is not real and there are not three suns shining in the sky. In ancient times this phenomenon was considered as a bad omen and people used to stay at their homes when they used to see three suns shining.
Scientifically this phenomenon is known as the parehelion and it is caused by the ice crystals hanging or suspended in the air in winters when the temperature falls to -30 degrees. The real sun is in the center while the two on the left and right are called sundogs or phantom sons.
These ice crystals are cleans and transparent now what happens is that as the atmosphere is cold so they get suspended in the air and they form a vertical shape now then sun rises the light passes through these crystals.
These crystals act like prism and when the light falls on them they reflect it at an angle of 22 degrees. Thus the other two suns automatically appears up. These sundogs will remain at the same elevation but their distance with the real sun will increase with the movement of the sun.
At the time of rising these sundogs will be nearer to the sun and as the sun moves as per his natural position these sundog will increase their distance from it.
The probability of three suns shining in the sky is present at those places where the temperatures re really low but when it comes to Mongolia it is the favorite place for this phenomenon to take place called as the parehelion.
It is strange to witness three suns but in real there are no three suns in the sky there is only one and the other two are light reflections but in ancient times this phenomenon was taken as a bad omen and people used to fear from it.
The scientific study tells us that this phenomenon is caused by ice crystal that are suspended in air due to a very cold weather and we know in Mongolia the temperature falls down to as low as -30 degrees. These two extra suns are termed as sundogs or phantom suns.
The process starts with these ice crystals which are clean, clear and transparent and they are vertically suspended in the air one top of the other. When the sun rises from the east the light falls directly onto these small crystals.
These small crystals now they start acting like a prism and reflect the sunlight an exact angle of 22 degrees and in result the sunshine converges at a point and itself appears as a sun.
Another remarkable thing is that these sundogs will never change their height or elevation it will remain the same throughout the process but their distance from the real sun present in the center varies with the natural position of the sun.
At the rising they will be closer to the real sun and with the movement they will go away from the real one until they reach their maximum distance.
