For many the freedom movement in Kashmir started after the subcontinent partition but there are hardly who knew that it was a long before the partition when the seeds were soiled and the roots emerged of this tree.
It was July 13, 1931 when the Kashmiris said no to all the atrocities pulled upon their bodies and souls and they started a movement against the present ruler Maharaja Gulab Singh. The chain of events are taken from the history here.
On March 15. 1846 the British government sold the valley of Kashmir to Maharaja Gulab Singh for 7.5 million local rupees and named this bargain Amritsar treaty. The Muslims of Kashmir became the first nation to be sold in such a vast number.
This put them down as a nation and the rest of the courage flee when the Dogra forces of Maharaja started executing their atrocities throughout the valley. The Kashmiri Muslims took it as a part of their fate and led their arms and heads down to it.
In these dark times when the Kashmir Muslims were seeing even their holy book of Quran getting destroyed they felt helpless but then rose Abdul Qadeer young Muslim who at a gathering spoke a few words to the Kashmiris and his words changed the whole Kashmir till this day.
He asked his people to stand up against the tyranny and injustice and take down the cruel Maharaja. Abdul Qadeer was immediately arrested by the Dogra forces and was sent to jail upon charges of igniting rebellious movement against the state head.
When he was in Jail the people of Kashmir gathered around the central gate of the jail and at the same time the Juma prayer time came up. One young guy stood up to call the Azan and as soon he started it he was shot.
The moment he fell on the ground another stood up and started the calls for prayers and he was shot too and one after the other many lost their lives that day. They were the first martyrs of Kashmir and the people who laid the foundations of this freedom movement we see today.
The freedom movement in Kashmir never started on after the partition it started long before this partition back in the year 1931. The day the Kashmiris decided not to stay silent with heads bowed down to tyranny and atrocities.
It all happened after the Amritsar treaty in which the British rule sold this valley of Kashmir to Maharaja Gulab Singh who immediately suppressed the local Kashmiris and never allowed them to live in any kind of freedom.
His forces made sure that each and every Kashmir gets the full effects of their atrocities and admits them as their new leaders. The atrocities that were shown to the Kashmiri people is hard to tell and write about.
Many lost their lives during those times and the people of Kashmir didn’t resisted and took it as their fate and started living their lives in the most oppressed way possible. A few incidents jolted them but the fire went missing in the hearts of Kashmiris.
They were not allowed to offer their prayers and after that with a gap f few days a Quran was burnt by the Dogra forces which really shook the Kashmiris. A gathering was announced in protest to these atrocities by the Dogra forces.
In that protest a young Kashmiri named Abdul Qadeer stood up and spoke a few lines that changed the history of Kashmir. He said I say no to this tyranny and the tyrant and I say lets us go and bring his palace down.
Here he spoke these words that ignited the old fire there he was taken into custody by the Dogra forces and later was sent to jail. The people of Kashmir on a Friday gathered around the main gate of the jail to protest against the arrest of Abdul Qadeer.
The date was July 13, 1931 and came upon them all the time for Juma prayers and one Kashmiri stood up to make the call for prayers and he was shot down. He fell another stood up and met the same fate and then another one.
This was the moment the day when the Kashmiris said no to Maharaja Gulab Singh and his tyrant rule and demanded a free life given to them by their Lord.
