A couple of weeks ago I had a guy come up to me to ask why I was swinging the big iron kettlebell and executing heavy cleans during my workout. It wasn't a bad question, but I could see his reason behind asking it before I even gave him my reply. He followed up by saying "Only football players train that way." I knew this was ignorance talking so I simply replied by asking him why he was doing seated arm curls with 30 lb dumbells? The reason I asked him that question was the same reason he asked me. The point of all of this is that I wanted to hear his rationale which ended up being that he just "Wanted to look good." Without sounding arrogant and truly being sincere I was quick to point out that I didn't exactly resemble the Pillsbury Dough Boy! I think he got the point.
You see in order to build a significant amount of muscle mass you have got to be willing to pay the price! This isn't only true for those that just want more muscle, but its true for anyone wanting to get results from any exercise program. You see your training has to go beyond the act of doing a mindless 9 sets of arm curls. I'm not saying arm curls don't have a purpose, but in order to significantly stimulate the development of your muscle mass you have got to significantly elevate your body's level of perceived exertion. This is about effective and smart training.
You see when you engage your body in certain movements and lifts that integrate large muscle groups and multiple joints you kick your body's nervous system into high gear. By doing this you just set the catalyst for an array of different things to start happening to your body from the inside out. When you stimulate your nervous system you increase your respiration, heart rate, blood flow, growth hormone production, and an array of other actions that will transform your body into something that resembles a lean Greek work of art! Just like that guy in the gym with me the other day I was also quick to point out how fit athletes look. This is the case because athletes have very vigorous and intense workouts that not only advance their performance, but give them lean hard healthy bodies as well.
If you want to build lean muscle mass then you have got to pay the price. I have been a personal trainer and strength and conditioning specialist in Atlanta, Georgia now for over 10 years and my clients experience this with me all the time. If you are looking to improve your physique and get real results then start training for a real purpose. Remember that most anyone can train hard, but only the best train smart my friend.
