Deepak Chopra in his book "reinventing the body, resurrecting the soul" tells of people who are living their life in disguise. Here is how I woke up to the disguise I was learning.
Born and raised in central Queensland I was the sheep graziers daughter who was a little bit above average at school and who learnt all of the things that country kids learn such as riding horses and motorbikes. I learnt to fish for barramundi, yellow belly and jew fish in our creek & to catch yabbies in the many muddy dams on our property. At high school I took economics, business principles, typing and shorthand. My father was grooming me for a job in a local council office and I would have done well there.
After I graduated from year 10, I moved away to complete my senior college. It wasn't recommended that young women of my age leave school at year 10, although many of my friends did and they all are quite content with their lives. After completing year 12, I completed University entrance tests and essentially applied for what I thought I liked doing - which was writing - to do journalism. My tertiary entrance score was enough for me to gain entry into a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Journalism. I had done work experience at the local newspaper office and I liked the sound of that, so I moved away to a larger regional centre to complete my University education. I was the first in my family to complete a University degree. I changed track from Journalism to Computer Science. After graduating, I worked briefly in industry, but I didn't care for all the high stress and long working hours.
In absolute turmoil I went back to visit my University lecturers and they invited me to come back and work as a tutor at the University and to continue my education. I worked hard and completed a Masters and Doctorate, all in Computer Science.
Universities are large corporate organizations and they are full of people who work with a silo mentality. I wasn't very happy, and so I decided to run a little bit further. So, I started applying for International jobs. I successfully applied for a 1 year position at University of Reno in Nevada in the United States. I was unable to take up the position, because my husband was unable to get a green card to work in the United States (this was in the late 1990's when work was plentiful in the US). So, I asked my husband how far we could run to and he was prepared to move to New Zealand because Australia and New Zealand have a reciprocal employment arrangement and also because New Zealand is only a 4 hour plane flight from the eastern seaboard of Australia.
We loaned some money from my husband's parents in order to make the move to New Zealand after I secured a job in the Hutt Valley just outside the capital of New Zealand, Wellington. At first, it was like we were on an extended holiday enjoying tramping, skiing, and riding cruiser motorcycles around the countryside. We also enjoyed kayaking in the sounds.
Again, I became frustrated at my job and also had a longing for family. My husband and I visited his great grand mother who lives by herself in Adelaide. At that point I experienced a strong longing for family & so I decided to create a family of our own. In 2004, our first son was born. At the same time, I received voluntary redundancy from my place of work - I had a subtle call from my manager that strongly suggested that I apply for redundancy and the application was accepted within 24 hours of me making application.
During that time, I had my first experiences with self development and I was encouraged to work with dreams in an effort to overcome my current frustrations with my life and to help me to adapt to being a Mum and so on. This was the first time that I had very clear visions of the road leading back to our family property in central Queensland. I would see myself as a very feminine princess riding a big white horse traveling back along the road, taking shortcuts through the dry creek bed.
At the time, (this was 2004), I didn't get the significance & I successfully applied for a job in Auckland where they were willing for me to start when my son was 6 months old.
