Can you believe that you are halfway through your pregnancy? During month five, which spans between 17 weeks and 20 weeks pregnant, you are looking very pregnant. Your uterus is now the size of a cantaloupe, and it is positioned just below your navel. There is no more denying your pregnancy. In fact, you may have gained at least eight to ten pounds. If you're carrying twins or multiples, you will have gained more than this.
Mom's Changes - Month 5 of Pregnancy
If you haven't already, you will soon begin to feel your baby's movements in utero. This is called "quickening," and it usually occurs in the fifth month of pregnancy. Most women feel quickening between 16 weeks and 22 weeks of pregnancy. Your baby's first movements may feel like butterflies in your stomach, or gas bubbles. First-time mothers may confuse gas with quickening, but the further along you are, the easier it will be to distinguish your baby's flips and flops from indigestion and gas.
Now that you are in the fifth month of pregnancy, all traces of morning sickness should have disappeared. You will notice an increase in appetite. You may even have strong food cravings. Just remember to continue eating a healthy and balanced diet.
As your developing baby continues to grow in your womb, you may notice some abdominal discomfort and achiness. This is called "round ligament pain," and it's a common second trimester complaint. As your uterus expands, the round ligaments supporting it stretch and end up hitting nerve centers around the uterus, leading to the pain and discomfort you feel.
Other pregnancy symptoms you may experience in month five of pregnancy include water retention and swelling, constipation, dizziness, heartburn, leg cramps, and back aches.
Fetal Development - Pregnancy Month 5
During month five of pregnancy, fat begins to form underneath the skin. Your baby's skin is still transparent, and blood vessels can be seen underneath. However, as more fat deposits underneath your baby's skin, this will soon change.
The circulatory and urinary systems are working by the fifth month. Your baby's eyebrows and eyelashes are growing. In addition, your baby can now yawn, stretch and make funny faces. Taste buds are starting to develop, and your baby can distinguish sweet and bitter tastes. Your developing baby is also spending much of his or her time hiccuping in the womb.
By the end of month five, your baby measures between 10 inches long from crown to rump. He or she weighs almost a pound! Your baby continues to pack on the pounds as your pregnancy week by week continues.
