Bike accidents involving automobiles are often among the most gruesome and disturbing of all auto accidents because bicyclists, unlike car drivers, are not protected by anything. They are completely vulnerable to anything that may come their way. Basically a person on a bike is incredibly fragile when it comes to being on a road with cars. They are at much more risk if they are not wearing a helmet, which is very common with bike riders despite the many inherent risks that come along with riding a bike in traffic.
Bike accidents are actually fairly common. Most people that ride a bike everyday have been involved in a bike accident involving a car at least once. The accidents have varying degrees of severity ranging from a mishap at a stop sign resulting in a sprained ankle to a major accident on a busy street which can end in death.
But no matter what the type or severity of the accident may be, there are certain procedures that should be done every time you witness or are involved in a bicycle and motor vehicle accident.
The Steps
After the initial shock of the accident has passed, you should:
•
Immediately check yourself, or the person you witnessed get hit, for any signs of injury. If there is ANY sign of injury, immediately call an ambulance. It is important to do this even if the injury seems minor as if it was a bicyclist, he or she may be suffering from head trauma which does not always show obvious or immediate signs.
•
Call the police-a police report must be filed for the accident. This is imperative to pursuing a possible lawsuit if you are not reimbursed for damages. If it was a hit and run, the driver will be charged with a felony and you will need as much information as possible in order to track them down.
•
Find witnesses-it is incredibly important to pursuing a lawsuit or a criminal investigation that as many things that occurred at the time of the accident are brought to light. Eye witness testimony is incredibly important to investigations.
•
Preserve evidence-if you were involved in a hit and run, all things that may be used as evidence should be preserved. This includes helmets, clothing and even the bike itself.
