Hospitals are places where thousands of individuals put their trust in. There are sick and ailing people towards whom the hospital or the healthcare facility has a binding responsibility. It is the duty of the hospital to protect their patients against all types of natural hazards like fires. One of the ways hospital staff can prevent the damage by fires is by using suitable fire exit signs.
The fire plan
It's highly recommended that all hospitals should maintain a fully detailed fire plan which should serve the staff in emergencies. This fire plan should include instructions on placement of warning signs, fire exit signs detecting immediate presence of fire, transmitting messages in times of emergency and evacuation procedures.
This plan is a document which should be circulated amongst all the hospital staff. This document should be updated in accordance to the change in hospital facilities. It's also expected that a copy of this document should be submitted for approval to the fire code official
Identify hazardous objects
The first preventive step when it comes to fire safety is to identify potential hazards in the hospital area. There are a number of chemical solutions, medicines and other objects inside a compound which can serve as fire hazards. The staff should identify such objects and display appropriately worded warning signs besides them.
Sometimes fire may occur due to short circuits, fuse failure and other electrical issues. It's always good practice to have a professional and competent electrician check the condition of the wiring inside the hospital premises.
The condition of electrical appliances in the hospital should be duly checked for any defects. The workability of fire alarms, fire exit signs and the condition of the fire safety equipment should also be tested at specific intervals.
Call code red
Fire safety experts advice that all hospital staff members who spot the fire should immediately see whether any patient is directly involved in the fire. If they discover that a patient is involved then they should directly go and help the patient all the while shouting "code red" along with the room number of the patient. This usage of code will stop the panic from spreading amongst other patients. All staff members in the adjacent area who hear this message should go and activate the fire alarm.
If no patients are directly involved in the fire then the staff should try to isolate the fire and then activate the applicable fire alarms. Ideally hospital staff should be duly trained in a command structure so that there is one person designated as "commander" or "principal firefighter" in an emergency. Patients should use the fire exit signs to guide themselves out.
Follow R.A.C.E.
R.A.C.E stands for rescue, alarm, confine and extinguish. The first step to ensure the safety of patients should be to rescue them. An immediate assessment of fire should be performed along with steps to remove patients to a separate room unaffected by fire. The second step is to activate the fire alarm and then confine the fire to a specific location. The fourth step is to try extinguishing the fire with available firefighting equipment.
